1st Cropwell Bishop Scout Group (7-12-10)

Scouts The Group has now been open for one year and what a year it has been! The Group now has Beaver, Cub and Scout sections with a combined Group membership in excess of 100 members.

As I sit and reflect on the year and how quickly it has passed, it would be difficult to try and pick out any single event as a highlight of the year. Suffice to say, the Group have been involved in many exciting and challenging activities, including archery, climbing, orienteering, rafting, canoeing and dragon boating to name but a few. Perhaps of all the activities most associated with Scouting, camping is the one which immediately springs to mind. During the last year we have been away to camp twice and on each occasion the Cubs and Scouts have taken part in a range of activities whilst enjoying the delights of a British summer under canvas, needless to say a good time was had by all. The Beaver Colony also had a Halloween Sleepover at Cropwell Butler Village Hall where the highlight was a large camp fire where we sung songs under a star lit night sky, I think possibly the only one of the year!

None of the above would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Leaders supported by the Committee and parents, a fact which was recognised when the Group Scout leader, Chris keast, was presented with The Rushcliffe Community Award for Supporting Children and Young People at a Civic reception during November. The Group have also been awarded a Grass Roots Grant of £5000 to purchase some new lightweight camping equipment which will enable us to take part in many of the overnight and specialist expeditions which are organised each year.

Looking forward into the New Year, the Group will be opening a second Beaver Colony to meet the very high demand and developing further our joint Explorer provision with Kinoulton. Anyone interested in placing their child or young person on the waiting list or helping out should contact us through our website www.cropwellscouts.com

The leaders are finalising an exciting programme of activities including several camps and nights away so come and join the adventure in 2011.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

'Children in Need' at the Old School (19-11-10)

Children in Need 2010 Children in Need 2010 It was fun and exciting on the Television, but it was even better at the Old School this evening!

Over 60 of our young people entered into the spirit of this great fund raising event. They dressed the part and organised lots of activities in the hall and back room. More importantly, they spent the weeks before urging others (all those 'rich' (relatively speaking) adults around them) to give money generously to help children in Britain who need our help.

Let's not forget the efforts of those adults who helped them make this night such a success. Parents and helpers all played their part but ultimately the organisers of CKOB (Cropwell Kids of Bishop) are the ones who made this all possible.

Lisa, Jo, Mel, Alan, Peter and others who make Friday nights a fun time in Cropwell Bishop for children.

There had been talk of trying to raise £1000 for Children in Need. Would just 70 or so children collect so much money?

As I write, the night is not yet over and not all the money has been counted but I am assured they have indeed already raised over one thousand pounds!

We can be proud of our children—what a fantastic effort.
